NBA Betting Systems

Let's face it, there's plenty of NBA betting systems being thrown around on the internet today. From the more popular ones involving purchasing points (Sports Betting Champ) to the more obscure of only betting underdogs of 5-7 points (yes, I just made that up, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone were trying to sell one like it).

NBA betting systems (or trends) are a dime a dozen. If you look hard enough, you can find them just about anywhere. Some are worthless, while some still hold decent value.

However, overtime they all will most likely go by the waste side because of the law of averages or the sportsbooks will eventually catch on and negate any kind of advantage. Yes I know, those damn sportsbook managers trying ruin all our fun.

NBA betting systems (all betting systems) should only be used to supplement your NBA handicapping strategy/philosophy. In other words, the reason for betting a game should never be solely based on a system.

There must be other criterion for why you've come to that conclusion...in other words, have some research and hard data to back it up. Most people get burnt by just blindly betting whatever the system is telling them to do. It may work the first few times, but I guarantee it'll catch up with you.

What I'd like to do here is list a few NBA betting systems that I've used over the years (and currently use) that still offer some value. But of course, these systems will eventually lose there value as well.

These aren't some kind of get rich schemes like you read about on many of the sports betting system websites (trust me, they don't exist anyway, as much as they want you to believe). These are simply systems that can be used and added to your NBA handicapping philosophy.

Again though, they should never be used as the sole purpose for making a wager but rather a compliment to your own research and data. Let me also preface this by saying you should always back test these systems a few years to make sure they are still viable and profitable.

As of right now, 2010, they still offer value, but in 2, 3 or 10 years from now, they may be worthless...so it's very important, again, to perform your own back testing. Also since I prefer to bet totals much more than sides, you'll see that most of these NBA betting systems apply to the over/under.

NBA Betting Systems: Sports Betting Professor, Sports Betting Champ, and Bookie Buster

I group these together because they're all systems that must be purchased. These are certainly the three most popular betting systems that you see advertised just about everywhere on the internet.

They each have at least one system dedicated to the NBA, so that's whey I include them here. Each one offers things I like, as well as some things I really don't like.

I won't go into the details here because I've written a review for each (just click on each one to read my thoughts on the following NBA betting systems: Sports Betting Professor, Bookie Buster, and Sports Betting Champ.

NBA Betting Systems: The High Total System

I have to give credit to Allen Moody over at About.com for introducing me to this system. To get started, you first need to find totals set at 220 or above.

The next criteria is to make sure that the two teams playing are from opposing conferences. When you find totals that match those two criterion, you want to give the over a very hard look.

From the 04-05 season through the 08-09 season it is 31-18 or about 63.5%. Now this is a very small sample size, but anything that hits over 63% for nearly 50 games should be given some credence.

NBA Betting Systems: The Low Total System

A system that I've applied to my NBA handicapping for a number of years (and has been mentioned by a number of writers over the years) is to bet the under on the lowest total on the board, as long as there are at least four games being played.

Yes, I know it sounds absurd and so simple, but it's something that should be monitored. The reason being is so much of the betting public is always taking overs and we know that they don't win most of the time (most of the time).

Even more important is to wait and take the under right before game time because you'll most likely get 2-3 extra points throughout the day with the public pushing up the total. Again, I know it sounds so simple, but it's one of those NBA betting systems that I always keep in my arsenal.

NBA Betting Systems: The Home-Away Totals System

Once again, I have to give thanks to Allen Moody at About.com for introducing this system to me as well. This NBA betting system looks at how teams play at home and how that varies to when they play on the road.

What we are looking for in this system is the average of the total score in games that are played at home vs the average total score in games that are played on the road. For instance, when Team A plays at home, the average score is team A 99 and their opponent 95 for a total of 194.

While on the road, the average score for team A is 93 with their opponent averaging 91 for a total of 184. We can see that there is a 10 point difference in the total points scored when team A is playing at home versus on the road.

What we're looking for are teams with differences of at least 5 or more points between home and away averages and we will bet those totals accordingly. For team A, we would look to bet the over at home and the under on the road.

This system should only be used beginning on January 1 of the current season in order to have enough data. In other words, it's not a good idea to use the averages from the year prior because of player changes. As I've said with all of these system though, this should be used to supplement your overall NBA handicapping strategy.

Conclusion

While these are only a few systems that I have in my NBA handicapping playbook, they are some of the most profitable I've used over the years. Overtime, you'll certainly pick up many more, as well as discard those that are no longer useful.

Now that you have a few NBA betting systems in your handicapping arsenal, let's take a look at some NBA betting software and see how it can you help out your overall strategy. As always, best of luck in all your sports betting endeavors.
