NFL Betting Guide

NFL betting is certainly the most popular form of sports gambling in North America. The NFL has grown into the juggernaut of all sports which has lead to the immense popularity of betting on football. As much as the NFL hates and will never admit being associated with sports betting, there certainly is a parallel between the two.

Both have grown by leaps and bounds over the past twenty years and continue to grow on an annual basis. Heck, analysts predict wagers on just the Super Bowl to be in the billions of dollars. Betting on NFL games is a reality and it will only expand right along with the popularity of the NFL.

NFL Betting Overview

Wagering on the NFL in it's simplest form is merely picking a team to win or lose by a certain amount of points (known as the NFL point spread). Over the years though, as with all things, betting on the NFL has adapted and grown.

You can now find online sportsbooks that offer just about any type of wager you're wanting to place on an NFL game. These are called proposition bets i.e. total amount of passing yards a QB with have, number of field goals made, number of sacks...etc. The list can go on and on and the Super Bowl can have hundreds of them being offered.

You can even bet on any quarter, the 1st half, or at halftime. If you can think of it, I almost guarantee you can bet on it in an NFL game. Now let's be honest though, 99% of all these wagers are what's called sucker bets and should never be touched.

I prefer and suggest to only bet the side (point spread) or the total (number of points scored by both teams combined). Every once in a while you may see some propositions that have some value, but otherwise, I highly recommend you stick with betting the NFL point spread or the total.

NFL Betting Advice

First off, if anyone tells you that betting on the NFL is easy, then they're a liar...because it's not. Talk with any oddsmaker, professional handicapper, or sportsbook, and they'll tell you the same. Being the most popular sport in North America makes betting on the NFL that much more difficult.

Because of its popularity and being that so many people wager on it more than any other sport, the lines set by the oddsmakers (point spreads and totals) are extremely sharp. By sharp, we mean that the lines are very difficult to get a read on in order to know which side to bet (we'll cover this more throughout our NFL Betting Guide).

As I just stated, for most people the NFL is more difficult to bet on than any other sport. This can be attributed to so much more money being bet on it than any other sport. Honestly, you'd have a much better chance of winning by betting small college basketball conference games since the oddsmakers don't spend nearly as much time setting those lines as they do with the NFL.

But most people don't care because of their love for watching football (rooting for their team) and not to mention, every game is on TV. Maybe not the best way to go about gambling, but that's just reality. Whether you're betting on the NFL for fun or you're looking at it as an investment, we'll take you through our NFL Betting Guide that will help anyone from the beginning football bettor all the way to the grizzled veteran.

If you're serious about betting on sports and looking at it as an investment, then learning the concepts of betting on the NFL can also be applied to NCAA Football, where you'll actually have more opportunities. Without further ado, let's check out the table of contents to our NFL Betting Guide:

Over time, we'll add more informative and helpful essays and articles. Just remember that betting on sports, the NFL in particular, is supposed to be fun. If it ever becomes a burden or is taking away from your family or everyday life, then you may need to step away for a while or seek help.

If you're just betting on NFL games for fun, then that's one thing. However, if you're serious about it, then you must look at it as a long term investment. You're going to have losing streaks, there's just no way around it. How you handle those losing streaks is what separates a successful NFL handicapper from a square (loser).

As always, best of luck in all your sports betting endeavors.
