Weighing The Odds
In Sports Betting
by King Yao

By far one of the more popular books on sports handicapping, Weighing the Odds in Sports Betting has proven to be a well written and interesting read. Although probably more geared for the beginning to intermediate handicapper, King Yao introduces some very good insight and concepts.

From the beginning to the end, he hits briefly on just about every sport, as well as handicapping in general. For apparent reasons, the most discussed sport is the National Football League.

Although sharp handicappers may not pick up a lot due to the relatively novice concepts discussed, I still think it's a must read for any handicapper. If nothing at all, it will at least reinforce or refresh some information that you may have forgotten over time.

It's certainly not going to give you some kind of top secret formula to winning at sports betting...nothing will. I'll say this again, because it's this important, nobody will give you their best information when it comes to betting on sports.

For obvious reasons, sharp bettors are going to keep their best secrets to themselves...no matter what touts and websites tell you otherwise. It's just not in their best interest..and King Yao won't either.

Weighing The Odds In Sports Betting -
What I liked

On a personal level, I really did enjoy the book and feel it's a must read for any sports bettor. He starts from the beginning and slowly gets into more intermediate type concepts.

He shares a ton of good information and data. The charts and tables are very good as well. From expected value (EV) to money line conversions, hedging, scalping, and middling, King Yao mentions it all (some in more detail than others, but definitely eye opening to the beginning handicapper).

It's a very unbiased and straightforward book. He offers good information on the sports betting market and certainly goes into the more statistical side of sports betting. If you don't know already, you certainly will know the importance of probability, value, standard deviation, etc. when it comes to handicapping sports.

As previously stated, Weighing the Odds in Sports Betting has a few chapters that introduce some interesting concepts on handicapping individual sports. He also dedicates quite a bit of time to proposition bets and the incredible EV that can be found with them (this is must read stuff).

Finishing out the book are some very good tips to follow, as well as some advice on handicappers that sell their picks. He also recommends a few websites and forums.

He concludes the book with a very good interview with a professional who was part of a betting group in Las Vegas. "The Chaperone" shares some good insights into what goes in to being a professional and successful handicapper.

What I Dis-liked

There really isn't a whole lot I can complain about with Weighing the Odds in Sports Betting. Granted, sharp or professional bettors may not get much out of it, but I truly feel there's something in there for everybody.

You knew he wasn't going to give you his best information, but that of course is to be expected. Although I do feel he shared some insight that was relatively new, it may not hold much value anymore...possibly going against it might actually hold some value though now.

It could be a bit slow in places, but you'll have that when so many different concepts are being shared. I have read where some of the data and tables aren't 100% correct, but have not verified that information.

Our Recommendation

All in all, Weighing the Odds in Sports Betting was a very good read and is a must have for any sports bettor. Now will it make you rich overnight? Of course not, but it will open your eyes and may even increase your EV opportunities.

As you can probably tell by now, we fully endorse and recommend the book As with our website, Weighing the Odds in Sports Betting is merely a starting point to betting and handicapping on sports...it's up to you to take it to the next level.

For the beginner to intermediate bettor, you'll learn a lot of important information. What you have to decide is what to do with it and how to expand on it. King Yao does a great job of getting you going, but you have to get to the finish line yourself.

As always, best of luck in all your sports betting endeavors.
