How Sports Betting Works
Trying to figure out how sports betting works can certainly seem overwhelming at first.
From a parlay to a teaser, you're probably asking yourself what the heck any of this means.
Within our sports betting 101 section, we'll take you through everything you need to know.
I personally like to refer to "sports betting" as sports investing, simply because I look
at it as a long term investment as opposed to just wanting some action for the sake of
betting. Anybody just learning how sports betting works should look at it this way or else
it's going to be a short lived past time or career.
Sports betting has been around for several hundred years and will probably always be around
as long as we have sports to watch. Although it’s illegal throughout most of the United
States, it’s well accepted throughout Europe and of course in Las Vegas.
Now, let's figure out the basics of how sports betting works.
Sports Betting Terms
I personally think your best starting point is to get a good grasp of the various sports betting terms. Take a look at my
Sports Betting Dictionary
to get a better understanding of some general sports betting jargon. Ok, so are you ready to start betting yet? Yea, probably not but at least you have a solid starting point and understanding of a variety of sports betting terms. Our next step in figuring out how sports betting works is to actually find a place to make a bet. This may seem easy but trust me you want to do your research.
Choosing a Sportsook to Make a Wager
Now that you have a good grasp of the different types of bets as listed in the
sports betting terms
section, it's now time to
choose a place to make a wager
. If you live in Las Vegas or Europe, it could be as easy as walking down the street to the nearest sportsbook or casino. However, it's not that easy for most people. It basically comes down to two choices: a local bookie or an online sportsbook. I personally feel the online sportsbook is the way to go since the money must be deposited into the account up front while with a bookie, your account is typically on credit (which can be a very bad thing). There are hundreds of online sportsbooks out there today, some good and some not so good. Check out
Choosing a Sportsbook
to find out what to look for in deciding which sportsbook to go with, along with some of my personal recommendations as well as a very reputable sportsbook review web site. Since you’ll be depositing your hard earned money into an online sportsbook, I really suggest putting in the time to find the best one to suit your needs. Trust me, you don't want to find out the hard way. Local Bookie Before online sportsbooks, most people that didn't live in Las Vegas or Europe had to go this route. Obviously this is a little more risky option but if you know, trust, and are comfortable using a local bookie, then this may work better for you. The main reason I would steer clear is simply because, typically, all transactions are done on credit and this could get you into big trouble if you don't have the money to pay. Been there, done that and it's not much fun. You can definitely get in over your head with using a local. Especially if you're on a losing streak and find yourself trying to chase, which is a HUGE MISTAKE when it comes to betting on sports.
How Much to Bet
In learning how sports betting works,
money management
, is in my opinion the most important and easiest to control factor. I say easiest to control because you have the power to decide how much you want to bet on the game, where as who wins the game or covers the spread is totally out of your control. You must take advantage of what
you can control when betting on sports.
I cannot stress enough how important
money management
is to your sports investing strategy. You will have hot streaks and cold streaks but sports betting
money management
will allow you to not get to high or low (and also weather the losing streaks). I would really encourage you to read and understand as much as you can. Check out my
money management
page, where I go into much more detail. Once you have an excellent understanding of what it is, it's now time to create your own strategy and stick with it at all times.
Reading the Odds
Now that you've found somewhere to place a bet and deposited some money, the next step in our Sports Betting 101 is
understanding the odds
. This definitely can seem a little daunting at first.Check out
Understanding Sports Betting Odds
to get a better grip on point spreads. I really try to take you through the ins and outs of the numbers, what they mean and how to interpret them. Once you know how to read the odds, you're now ready for the hard part; trying to figure out who to bet on.
Research
Right along with sound
money management
, research is extremely important before placing a bet and is very key in understanding how sports betting works. Whether it's placing your first bet or your millionth bet, research should play a major factor in whom you're going to bet on.I go into a lot more detail and recommend quite a few reliable web sites that I've used for years on my
Sports Betting Research
page. Even if you utilize the services of a
sports handicapper
, I still think it's vital to put in your own research. Along with
money management
,
sports betting research
is another important factor you can control. And when it comes to betting on sports, the more things you can control, the better off you're going to be. Whether your working with a handicapper for advice or you're doing the research yourself, you have to put in the time. I cannot stress how important it is to learn and read everything you can about how sports betting works.
Placing the Bet
And finally, actually placing the bet. There are tons of variables that go into what to bet on, which I try to cover thoroughly throughout the site. Putting in the bet is really where the rubber meets the road and the final part to learning how sports betting works (besides collecting your winnings, of course.
After you've done the research, determined the type of wager, who you want to bet on, it's now time to pull the trigger. Placing the bet is probably the easiest part because all you
really have to do is make a phone call or click a few buttons.
Although it may be easy to place the bet, it's not always easy to actually watch the game(bet) play out. But as long as you've put in the time, research, and have a very sound money management system, you should be able to reap the rewards of winning more often than not (although there will certainly be some streaks, winning and losing, along the way).
All I can say is to stay focused and don't lose your composure because that's where most people get burnt. I wish you the best of luck in all your sports betting endeavors.
