Sports Betting Stats
Finding accurate sports betting stats or a historic sports betting lines database can seem impossible. There's literally hundreds of websites out there tracking the information but it's very difficult to know the legitimacy or accuracy of the stats.
Any professional handicapper will tell you that accurate sports betting stats can be worth their weight in gold (this is another reason why I'm so adamant about keeping a record of every bet you place because you can always go back and check for trends that you may be able to capitalize on or avoid all together). ATS history really can be tough to come by, but to be honest, I'm always searching for a better website or a better database. Whether it's key numbers, head to head ATS match-ups, or probably the most popular of all, historical trends, you need to have a website or database that you can rely on for accurate sports betting stats.
Sports Betting Stats - Sports Betting Trends Before I go into a few of my favorite websites, I want to touch on something I mentioned above: sports betting trends. With sports betting, especially touts, you hear so much about trends, and to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of them. Generally they're used to manipulate the novice handicapper into purchasing a touts picks (and don't feel bad about it either because I always bought into them to when I was just getting started with sports betting). You can find sports betting trends that will support any bet you want to make. On the other hand, you can always find an equal amount supporting the exact same bet but the other way (all you have to do is look hard enough because there will always be a trend to support whichever way you want to bet). And that's the exact problem with trends, they're usually nothing more than pure coincidence. It all comes back to statistics or what's called binomial distribution. Like I said before, for the most part sports betting trends are meaningless and used as a sales tool to get you to buy someones picks. However, this doesn't mean that every single trend is meaningless. You just have to do a little homework. Let me just give you an example of a worthless trend: Team A is 10-4 ATS when playing Team B on Wednesdays. These two teams playing on Wednesdays has nothing to do with how they've fared ATS. But there maybe some legitimacy to searching how Team A has done against Team B as a whole and not just on Wednesdays. It can be very consuming, but if you have the time to do sports betting trend research then more power to you, but better time spent would be on studying the players of the teams or something that has meaning behind it. But as I said before when it comes to searching sports betting stats, seeking out trends is basically a waste of time. Don't fall into the trap of getting caught up and buying in them
Sports Betting Stats - Sports Betting Data Since there's so much data that can be analyzed when it comes to sports betting, it can certainly be overwhelming. Don't get caught up in what's called "analysis by paralysis." It's easy to do with the loads of betting stats that can be found.
I personally try to focus in on what works for me or what worked for someone in the past. Check out how a team under a certain head coach performs after a bye week when they're a home dog or favorite because their could be something meaningful there. For handicapping games in the beginning of the season, look at who's still on the team (particularly defense but also offense) and see how they've played as a unit. If they've had to bring in all new personnel (or they've graduated) then it might take a while for them to get used to playing with each other. The criteria that I start with when handicapping a game are (no particular order): injuries, previous match-ups (for both the team and coach), key numbers, previous games played that year, and where the public is betting (if you have access to public betting percentage). That's it. These are core factors of my handicapping philosophy. Now obviously I'll look at other variables depending on what sport, but I think it's good to have an overall base when you begin to handicap a game. I can't stress enough about not getting caught up in trying to analyze every sports betting stat that's out there. It's impossible to do and will get you nowhere. Focus in on what you're good at and develop your own sports betting philosophy when it comes to handicapping games.
Sports Betting Stats - Favorite Websites As I said before, finding accurate historical sports betting stats and data can be a tough task. Below I'll list my favorite websites that I use in search for data. Game Analysis and Match-ups - Not that we're biased, but we offer a great section dedicated to updated spreads/lines, game match-ups and analysis, stats, and much more. Definitely check it out. The Logical Approach - This is by far the best sports betting data base I have ever come across. Simply put, it's amazing. The amount of sports betting stats that are tracked and how far they go back for each sport is incredible. NFL stats go back to 1982, College Football to 1988, NBA to 1988-89, College Basketball to 1990-91, NCAA Tournament to 1985, and MLB to 1989. Granted, you do have to purchase each sport by the season, but I can guarantee you won't find a more comprehensive sports betting data base any where else. Definitely check it out. Sports Reference - Although not a sports betting stats specific website, this is a very complete and accurate sports database. They cover all major sports and it's extremely easy to use. I recommend this site be bookmarked for any sports fan. Sports Insights - Sports Insights is really a great site for any size handicapper. Granted they do charge a monthly fee, but the sports betting data and stats you have access to more than make up for the cost. ATS Database - Again, a monthly subscription website. However, they offer the most comprehensive sports betting stats database I have come across. It goes back a number of years for just about any sport. Avoid the touts that are being promoted on the site, but definitely give it a try and I'll think you'll see it's a really useful website. Sports Betting Stats - A good website for checking out various stats for the current season. I like it because it's easy to navigate and doesn't take any time to get used too. Covers - A great website and even better forum for sports betting information and research. Although with any forum, you always have to filter through what's fact and fiction. SBR Forum/Handicapper Think Tank - Probably my favorite forum of all. These a very good handicappers that share a lot of information about how to properly bet on sports. Various posts can include money management, sports betting stats, sports betting strategy...etc. This is one of those websites that any serious handicapper should have bookmarked. Well, that about wraps it up for my favorite sites when searching for sports betting stats. Trust me, there's probably hundreds of others out there and that's why I encourage anyone that has one they recommend to contact me so I can take a look and hopefully post it (Just click on the Contact Us button). As always, I wish you the best of luck in your sports betting endeavors.
